SL Benfica confirms its participation in the Madrid Football Cup U-14 and will be competing against the best teams in the category on September 15, 16 and 17. The Benfica Eagles made their debut in our tournament in 2017 where the Portuguese team finished in sixth place.
In that edition SL Benfica faced great international teams such as Flyeralarm Admira, FC Tatran Presov or Brondby IF in the group stage, while in the finals they lost to Real Madrid 2-0.
Benfica’s academy was founded in 2006 and has had a great importance in Portuguese and European football. The academy has produced great players such as Gonçalo Guedes, Bernardo Silva, Gonçalo Ramos and Joao Felix.
SL Benfica was founded in 1904. Together with two other Portuguese clubs, SL Benfica belongs to the “Big Three”. The club, nicknamed The Eagles, is the club with the largest following in Portugal, with nearly 14 million supporters worldwide and more than 250,000 members. The Eagles have won 37 Liga Prima titles, in 1950 they won the Latin Cup and in 1961 and 1962 they won the European Cup twice in a row. In those same years, they also played in the final of the Intercontinental Cup, in both of which they were runners-up.
Since 1963 they have been in the final of the European Cup 8 times. Benfica made history by being in those ten finals. After that, they ranked 7th all-time among UEFA clubs in 2014.
SL Benfica’s youth teams are also thriving in their National Youth Championship, the U-17, U-15 and U-14 teams are all ranked number one in their league and the U-19 team is now ranked third in the National Championship.
Benfica SL joins Paris Saint-Germain and Charlton Athletic as the first confirmed Madrid Football Cup U-14 teams. We will continue to announce the teams registered for this new edition, which will be of a high football level as in previous years.
