Charlton Athletic will be competing in Madrid on September 15th, 16th and 17th. The best U-14 teams from all over the world will once again compete against each other, this year for the 2023 title.
2022 was the first time the English club competed in the Madrid Football Cup. They ended up staying in the competition until the quarterfinals by beating Rayo Vallecano. This allowed them to reach the fifth place. They faced great rivals such as Antalyaspor, Rayo Vallecano, IF Brommapojkarna and Real Madrid FC.
Charlton Athletic has one of the best Academies in England, the Addicks Academy. Charlton has been ranked eighth in the most recent three-season ranking of the 92 Premier League and EFL clubs. Over a longer period, the club ranked first among the 72 ELF clubs and ninth among the 92 Premier League and EFL clubs. In those years, the Addicks’ academy has seen 68 graduates make their debuts.
During the Madrid Football Cup 2022, we had the opportunity to interview one of the team’s stars, Reuben Gohak, where he stated that participating in this tournament is a great opportunity to measure themselves against big rivals, which they are not used to. “It is a great challenge, and a very competitive tournament. It allows us to get to know my teammates better and improve with the spirit of the team.”
In last year’s edition of the Madrid Football Cup, Charlton Athletic was the best foreign team in the tournament, finishing fifth, ahead of big teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal FC and Porto CF.
